Transfer a domain to Just Domain.

Here is how a transfer actually works, what can hold one up, and how to move yours to Just Domain yourself.

On most endings a transfer adds a year of registration. That is registry policy, not ours.

How it works

Four steps, and we go first.

Check it can move

Start with the check, not with the unlock. The transfer page reads the domain’s registry record and tells you what, if anything, is in the way before you touch your current registrar.

Unlock where it lives now

Turn off the transfer lock in your current registrar’s dashboard. It stays off only while you move.

Get the auth code

Request the auth code (also called EPP or transfer code) - a short secret that proves you’re the owner. Registrars are required to provide it.

Approve and wait it out

Your old registrar may email you to confirm. Approve it, and the move usually completes within about five days.

One check before anything else: does your current registrar also run your DNS? Records do not travel with a domain, and that DNS can stop answering once the name leaves. If it does, we copy your records: the transfer page reads the records your domain serves today, you check them and add any it missed, and we build the zone here before the transfer is sent, so the domain starts answering from it when the transfer completes. If DNSSEC is on there, turn it off and wait 24 hours first. If your DNS is with an independent provider, the transfer leaves it where it is. Either way the check tells you which case you are in before you pay.

Before you start, check two things.

The recent-registration wait

A domain registered or transferred in the last 60 days usually can't move yet. For .com, .net and .org that window comes from ICANN's transfer policy, which lets your current registrar refuse a transfer inside it; for .io, .co and .ai the registry sets its own rule. Either way it's not ours, and nearly every registrar applies it.

Your contact email works

Transfer confirmations go to the addresses on the domain. If the old registrar has a dead email on file, fix that first or the approval mail lands nowhere.

What you will not find here: a retention script. Moving out is self-serve, and it gets you the auth code and nothing else. No phone call. No offer.

Common questions

What can Just Domain actually do about transfers today?

Both directions are self-serve. Moving a domain OUT: you switch the transfer lock off and get the authorization (EPP) code from your own account, and we email you both times it happens. Moving a domain IN: start at justdomain.ai/transfer, which checks the domain before you pay, and if the transfer does not complete you are refunded in full.

Will my website and email go down during the transfer?

Not if the records are in place when it completes. A transfer changes which registrar manages the domain; it does not move your records. If your current registrar is also your DNS host, that DNS can stop answering once the domain leaves, so we copy your records: the transfer page reads the records your domain serves today, you check them and add any it missed, and we build the zone here before the transfer is sent. The domain starts answering from it when the transfer completes. If DNSSEC is on at your current registrar, turn it off and wait 24 hours first; the check tells you if it needs to be. If your DNS is already with an independent provider, the transfer does not touch it at all.

Do I lose the time I already paid for?

No, and for most endings you gain some. On .com, .net and .org an inbound transfer adds a year of registration on top of whatever time is left. That is registry policy, not ours. Endings with their own registry rules can differ, and .ai runs on two-year terms; the transfer page shows the term being added, and the expected new expiry where it can be worked out, before you pay. One exception on .com and .net: if your current registrar renewed the domain automatically in the last 45 days, the registry cancels that renewal year when the domain moves.

Why can't I transfer my brand-new domain?

Most registrars hold a domain for 60 days after it's registered, and again after it moves. For .com, .net and .org that comes from ICANN's transfer policy, which permits your current registrar to refuse a transfer inside that window; other endings set their own equivalent. It's an anti-fraud measure, and almost nobody waives it. Note the date and move after it passes.

My old registrar is stalling on the auth code. Now what?

Registrars are required to provide it. Look for 'auth code', 'EPP code', or 'transfer code' in the domain's settings; if it's genuinely withheld, their support must hand it over on request. Once you have it, the rest of the move is out of their hands.

Does WHOIS privacy survive the move?

Privacy is a per-registrar service, so ours takes over here: included and on by default on supported endings, no add-on to remember. A few endings keep some details public by registry policy - flagged clearly, same as at registration.

And if I ever want to leave Just Domain?

You leave from your own account, without asking us. Switch the transfer lock off and get the authorization (EPP) code on the same screen: no support ticket, and currently no retention offer, survey, downgrade or fee for leaving. Whenever the lock changes or a code is issued we email your account address and the registrant address, and that notice has no off switch, because it is how you find out if someone else tries it. The only things that can hold a move up are the rules the registry sets for that ending, or a legal hold such as a domain dispute or a court order. It's your name. Can I check whether my domain is able to move before I do anything?

Yes. The free domain transfer checker at justdomain.ai/tools/domain-transfer-checker reads the public registry record for one domain and reports what, if anything, is in the way: a transfer lock, a window that has not cleared, expiry, redemption, an ending we do not sell, or premium pricing. It also says whether your DNS is answered independently of the registrar, and shows the full-term transfer price where it can be read. No account, and it changes nothing.
